Release Notes

Please take careful note, this release is very preliminary and not a complete solution.

Also keep in mind this is permanent, any sites created with this site definition can never be accessed by SharePoint Designer, ever.

Requirements

This initial release of the project contains a single SharePoint Solution Package (WSP) file, compatible with either Windows SharePoint Services v3 (WSS) or Microsoft Office SharePoint Server 2007 (MOSS).

How to Deploy

The solution package can be installed via STSADM.exe's ADDSOLUTION operation, and then deployed either via the DEPLOYSOLUTION operation with STSADM or through the Operations tab of your environment's Central Administration site. NOTE: the solution contains a .DLL file that will be deployed to the Global Assembly Cache (GAC), so include the allowgacdeployment switch if using STSADM

Package Notes and Usage Instructions

  • Please keep in mind that this release only prevents access via SharePoint Designer (SPD) to new site's created with the new SharePoint Team Site without SharePoint Designer access site definition. It does not update existing sites to prevent them from being modified by SPD, and it does not update other site definitions or templates in your environment.
  • Once the solution is deployed globally, all SharePoint web applications will display a new site template option when creating a new site or site collection, SharePoint Team Site without SharePoint Designer access
  • This release does not override or remove the original SharePoint Team Site site definition, it is still available.
  • Once a site is created using the new template, it can never be modified to allow access via SPD.

Roadmap

Subsequent releases will work to implement this solution in a more flexible and manageable fashion. This initial release is only intended to provide a quick solution for the most popular SharePoint site definition. Please carefully consider the implications of using this tool prior to creating sites or site collections with it, there is not an easy way to remove its restrictions.

As always, comments, questions, and suggestions are welcome.
